XLS Document Format

XLS Converter

The XLS file format was developed by Microsoft for its Excel spreadsheet program. XLS is a binary spreadsheet format that can include cell data and formulas, as well as charts and macros. Excel is one of the most popular software programs for recording, organising, calculating and analysing data. It’s often used for budgeting and reporting.

Microsoft introduced the new XLSX format for Excel in 2007, to replace XLS. However, you can still open XLS files in newer versions of Excel, as well as saving XLSX files into this older format. Excel is part of Microsoft’s Office suite, which is available as a one-off software purchase or an Office 365 subscription. Other spreadsheet programs that can usually open XLS files include Google Sheets, Apple Numbers and LibreOffice Calc.

JPG Image Format

JPG Converter

JPG, or JPEG, is one of the most widely used digital image formats. JPG is a universal format which can be opened by almost all image-viewing or -editing programs, by web browsers, and by certain other apps, and they’re supported by most devices. JPGs are 2D pixel-based ‘raster’ images, which makes them better for photographs or scans, rather than digital illustrations which are often better as ‘vector’ images. Many cameras, smartphones, and basic photo or drawing programs will automatically save into JPG format. However, you can usually adjust settings to save into other formats if needed.

JPEG stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group, which is the name of the committee that standardised the format. JPG is a ‘lossy’ format, meaning that it is compressed to save storage space and make it easier to share. This compression can affect quality, but this loss of quality isn’t noticeable to most users.

Frequently asked questions

If you've got any questions about converting or compressing files with Zamzar, we're happy to help! We've answered a few commonly-asked questions below, to get you started, and you can find out more information about file conversion and compression with Zamzar, in our Help centre.

There are several ways you can turn an Excel spreadsheet into a picture. With Zamzar’s website, you can quickly convert from Excel to image formats like JPG. Simply upload your Excel file to the conversion tool, select the image file format you want, then download it.

You can also copy cells and then paste them back into the document as an image, which you can then save. Another way is to take a screengrab of your spreadsheet, which you can open in another app to save as a JPG. However, you can lose resolution by using these methods.

If you can’t access Excel files on your Mac, you may want to convert them to another format. With online conversion tools like Zamzar you don’t need to have access to MS Office to convert Excel files. Zamzar’s three-step conversion tool works in real time – upload your Excel file, select JPG as the format to convert to, then download your new image file.

If you have access to Excel, then you could copy cells and paste them back as a picture, and then save the image using the ‘Save as Picture’ option. You would need to do this for each worksheet though, so an online conversion tool would be quicker if you want to convert more than one worksheet.

It’s easy to create a picture file from an Excel spreadsheet with Zamzar – just upload your Excel file to the website, select JPG or another picture format, then download the image.

You can also take a picture of an Excel spreadsheet on a Windows computer by using the ‘Print Screen’ button on your keyboard, pasting the image into a graphics editor, then saving as a JPG. Remember that this will only convert the data visible on the screen, and you may also need to crop the image afterwards.

Zamzar’s conversion tool, on the other hand, will make an image of all the used cells, without any blank space on the page, so less editing is needed if you use this option.

If you want to save an Excel file as an image, rather than using the ‘Print Screen’ or copy and paste functions, which can take several steps, Zamzar could help. You can convert Excel files to JPG, PNG, BMP and a number of other image formats in just a few clicks.

Just upload your Excel file to the free three-step converter on Zamzar’s website and select your image format. You can then download your spreadsheet as an image file, or series of image files if you have content on multiple sheets in the same Excel workbook.

There are a few ways you can save an Excel file as JPG on Windows, but one of the quickest is using an online conversion tool like Zamzar. Upload your Excel file, select JPG, then convert and download.

Other ways include using the ‘Copy’ and ‘Paste Special’ functions, or by taking screengrabs and then pasting into a graphics editor. However, the drawback of using these methods is that you may lose resolution or have to do more cropping or editing afterwards. You can also export your Excel as a PDF, then convert that to a JPG, but it’s probably much quicker to convert it directly with Zamzar!
