TAR Archive Format TAR Converter
The TAR file (also known as a Tape Archive or Consolidated Unix File Archive), was originally authored by AT&T Bell Laboratories in 1979, in the early days of Unix, and further developed by various open-source developers. It’s a popular archive file format used to contain and compress multiple files into a single file archive while preserving file permissions. Unlike other archive formats, TAR files don't contain compressed data.
The TAR format was originally developed to support tape backups but it is now used to package together multiple files and folders (such as software packages) for easy storage and transfer. TAR files can be opened with a variety of programs, such as Corel WinZip, RARLAB WinRAR, 7-Zip, The Unarchiver, File Viewer Plus and Apple Archive Utility.

TAR.GZ Archive Format
A .tar.gz file extension represents a collection of files grouped together as a Tape Archive File (TAR) that has been compressed using the Gzip compression application. This means that the file is given a double extension relating to both the archiving method and the compression method. Files of this nature are often referred to as a tarball.
